Unlike the popular Fuerte variety at the time, Hass’s tree produced fruit with a bumpy, dark skin and a distinctive rich, nutty taste. Encouraged by their enthusiasm, he decided to patent the tree in 1935, making it the first avocado tree ever to be patented in the United States.

The Hass avocado’s thick skin made it ideal for shipping, and its creamy texture won over consumers. Soon, growers across California began planting Hass avocados, and its popularity quickly spread.
